Down to Earth Construction Services know how annoying it is when you pull the plug on your sink and the water doesn’t drain away. Luckily there are a lot of drain unblocking products on the market which quickly deal with blockages. However no matter how easy and tempting it is to use one of these products, if you have a septic system it is wise to use an alternative method. If your drain is clogged a harsh chemical drain opener bought in the store can cause serious problems with your septic system. Septic system owners should use an alternative solution: a 1:1:1 ratio of salt, baking soda and vinegar. Follow this solution with boiling water or use a drain snake to clear out the clogs. Today we have septic repairs scheduled for customers who have contacted us because they have noticed that their septic system is not operating correctly. Often a septic breakdown is the result of a system not being used correctly and the cost and disruption could have therefore been avoided if the property owner had been better educated in the precautions to take when your property is supported with a septic system. We have appointments for septic repairs in Plainville, Wrentham, Rehoboth, Sharon, Norton and Mansfield MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have questions about your septic system please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services have found that many property owners, even those with septic systems, are not aware that for your septic system to work properly there needs to be a balance of bacteria which help breakdown waste so it can be processed. It is important to not disrupt this balance because then your septic system will not operate correctly. Important things to remember are:
Drain Openers – DO NOT use harsh chemical drain openers if you experience a clogged drain. Septic system owners should use an alternative solution: a 1:1:1 ratio of salt, baking soda and vinegar. Follow this solution with boiling water or use a drain snake to clear out the clogs. The chemicals that are used in today’s store-bought drain cleaners can cause serious problems within your septic system.
Cleaning Supplies – Chemicals can be damaging to your system as well. Instead of harsh cleansers, choose mild or natural cleaning supplies for your kitchen and bathrooms. Look for supplies that are “septic-safe” or that are marketed as being bio-degradable. These products will be approved for use in septic systems.
Antibacterial soaps and bleach – These can actually inhibit the enzymatic action that is required for the bacterial breakdown of solids within your septic tank. Add a laundry filter to your washing machine and use natural cleaning supplies whenever possible. If you have a water softener installed in your home, make sure that the salt recharge solution is redirected out of the septic tank.
We regularly attend septic repairs for customers who could have avoided a septic breakdown by following the above advice. Today we have septic repair appointments in Dighton, Berkley, East Bridgewater, Middleboro, Norton and Attleboro MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please do contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services have a vast amount of experience and expertise in the septic industry. We are able to use this knowledge to provide septic designs for our clients that best fit their needs and also the environment that the system will be placed. For example the septic system that is designed to go on a small plot to serve a private residence will not be identical to a septic system that is going on a property near wetlands that supports a restaurant. Septic systems all run on the same basic principle but the details vary and it is in those details that we can make sure that the system not only suits our clients expectations in regards to cost, efficiency and operation but also the environment in which it is situated. Today we have a septic design meeting at our Norton Office for a client with a property in Stoughton MA. If you require a septic system design or if you have any questions about septic designs or septic systems please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services has a septic installation starting today in Rochester MA. We are installing a septic system for a customer who needed to replace an old, outdated failing septic system. When septic system failure occurs, the conditions they create are dangerous! These can include:
Hazardous sewage surfacing in yard
Health hazards to children, neighbours and pets
Noxious orders over large areas
Polluted streams and ponds
Sewage back-up in buildings
Breeding areas for mosquitoes
It was therefore essential that they installed a new septic system. This new septic system will be installed quickly, correctly and with as little disruption as possible. We are able to do this because we have extensive experience installing septic systems in this region. We have recently installed septic systems in Oxford, Plainville and Mansfield MA. If you require a septic installation or if you have any questions about septic systems please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services have been contacted by a customer in Wrentham MA who require a cesspool replacement. We also have cesspool services scheduled today in Bellingham, Blackstone, Franklin, Upton and Uxbridge MA. As stated on Mas Gov:
“A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. A conventional septic system has a tank where solids can settle and begin to degrade, a distribution box, and a soil absorption system (SAS) that further treats the effluent by removing some of the bacteria, viruses, phosphorus, and nitrogen.”
To sell a property you need a Title 5 Inspection to be done. Title 5 does not require that cesspools be replaced however:
“cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant”.

Down To Earth Construction Services knows that purchasing a home is an incredibly stressful thing to do. Whether it is your first home or your fifteenth there is always a lot of moving parts to coordinate and this is doubly true if you are also selling a property at the same time. If the property your are buying or selling also has a septic system you are required in Massachusetts to have a Title 5 Septic Inspection on that system before Title transfer can take place. As stated on the Mas Gov website:
“The property owner or operator is responsible for arranging the inspection. The buyer and seller may change the responsibility for arranging the inspection prior to title transfer, provided that this change is put in writing and that the inspection still occurs within the specified timeframes.
The purpose of the inspection is to determine if the system in its current condition can protect public health and the environment. The inspection does not guarantee that the system will continue to function adequately, or that the system will not fail at a later date. This is particularly important if you plan to increase the flow to the system.
The inspection includes determining the location and condition of cesspools, septic tanks and distribution boxes. Often, this will not require extensive excavation.”

We know that when you are selling or buying a property schedules have to be kept and hold ups can cause repercussions with sales and purchases. That is why we would always recommend that if you are selling a home with a septic system that you have your Title 5 Septic Inspection done as soon as possible. You do not need to wait until you have a buyer. The inspection will be valid for two years and once your system has passed the inspection you can stop your septic from being a cause of concern or negative for prospective buyers. Today we have Title Septic 5 Inspections in Middleboro, East Bridgewater, Marshfield, Carver, Lakeville and Norton MA. If you require a Title 5 Inspection or if you have any questions about septic inspections or septic systems please do contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
