Down to Earth Construction Services were called out to provide septic repairs to a septic system for a private home in Norton MA. The homeowner had been noticing sewage smells coming from their plumbing and slow running drains so called us to discuss their concerns. Luckily they did not procrastinate for long and we were able to provide a simple septic repair for them which may not have been possible if they had waited for much longer. Small septic issues can become large septic problems and even total septic failures if they are left unattended for too long. We also have septic repairs today in Rehoboth, Attleboro, Seekonk, Mansfield and Taunton MA. If you need a septic repair or if you have questions or concerns about your septic system please do contact us at our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com where we would be happy to help you.
Down to Earth Construction Services have trained septic experts who can assist property owners with their septic engineering requirements. We can assist with services to improve or repair your property such as soil evaluations, septic design and land use planning, septic improvements such as installation of risers, covers or filters and construction layouts for large or small commercial developments. Today we are conducting a soil evaluation for a customer in Plainville MA. The soil evaluation will determine if the client’s building site is suitable for a conventional septic system and is typically called a “perc test’ or “perk test” (a percolation test). Traditional septic systems only work if the soil in the leach area is sufficiently permeable that it can readily absorb the liquid effluent flowing into it. Also, there must be at least a few feet of good soil from the bottom of the leach pipes to the rock or impervious hardpan below, or to the water table. Less commonly, a site can fail because the soil is too permeable, allowing the effluent to reach the groundwater before it is fully treated. Very steep slopes are also unsuitable for a conventional leach field. The specific standards vary from town to town, but any of these characteristics can prohibit the use of a standard gravity-fed septic system. Down to Earth Construction Services have extensive experience with various types of septic system so there are always alternative systems that can be used if the perc test does show some unfavourable results for a conventional system. We also have extensive experience with towns in this region so we know the individual requirements for different towns. We have other septic engineering appointments today in Norton, Rehoboth, Raynham, North Attleboro and Dighton MA. If you would be interested in our septic engineering services or if you have any questions about septic engineering please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Down to Earth Construction Services know that in the beautiful New England Summer many people are out in their yards planting and gardening. Unfortunately when you are planting large shrubs or trees in your yard if you do so on your leach field you can unknowingly create a septic problem. The roots and sometimes weight of plants can actually damage your drain field which means that your septic system is no longer working correctly. Septic systems do an amazing job of returning liquids to the soil for purification but the whole system needs to be functioning correctly for this to happen. When septic system failure occurs, the conditions they create are dangerous. These can include:
Hazardous sewage surfacing in yard
Health hazards to children and pets
Noxious odors over large areas
Polluted streams and ponds
Sewage back-up in buildings
Breeding areas for mosquitoes
Today we are at a customer’s home in Rochester, MA repairing their leach field which has been damaged when they planed an orchard over it last year. The roots combined with heavy machinery being parked on the drainfield during construction have both lead to the structural collapse of the leach field piping. A strong sewage odor and dampness over their yard was luckily a sign of a septic problem that the homeowners did not ignore. We can repair the damage so they do not have to worry about the consequences of an inoperative septic system. We also have other septic repairs scheduled today in Rochester, Seekonk, Fairhaven, Fall River and Mattapoisett MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please do call us at our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services have septic inspections scheduled today in Mansfield, Holliston, Franklin, Bellingham, Upton, Uxbridge and Sharon MA. The reasons that people schedule inspections are not only because they are selling their home and require an inspection before they can sell. A septic inspection is required in Massachusetts:
Within 2 years before a sale. If weather conditions prevent inspection at the time of a sale, the inspection must take place within 6 months afterward.
When there is a proposed change to the facility which requires a building or occupancy permit.
Any change in the footprint of a building, to make sure that new building construction will not take place on top of any system components or on the system’s reserve area.
For large systems with a design flow of 10,000 to 15,000 gallons per day or more at full build-out, on the basin schedule shown in 310 CMR 15.301(6), and every five years thereafter.
Every 3 years for shared systems.
When the property is divided, or ownership of 2 or more properties is combined.
When MassDEP or the local Board of Health orders an inspection.

Down to Earth Construction Services work with many customers that don’t have conventional septic systems on their property but instead have a cesspool. As stated on the Mass Gov website:
“A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. A conventional septic system has a tank where solids can settle and begin to degrade, a distribution box, and a soil absorption system (SAS) that further treats the effluent by removing some of the bacteria, viruses, phosphorus, and nitrogen.”
Although cesspool are now not installed because there are more efficient and environmentally conscious alternatives Massachusetts does not always require cesspools to be replaced. They state that:
“Only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).”

Down to Earth Construction Services are always willing to provide information to property owners who have septic systems. One piece of advice is always to not build over your septic system because it can impair your system and can be an issue if you should ever have a septic problem. This is certainly true for our customer today who has a home in Rochester MA. We are having to move their deck to install a new septic tank for them. Unfortunately when they installed their back deck their contractor did not consider the septic tank underneath which has made a simple septic tank installation much more expensive and it will take longer because their deck needs to be removed to do the installation. Fortunately for our customer Down to Earth Construction Services have the tools and experience to do the removal, excavation and installation. We have recently installed other septic systems including new septic tanks for customers in Westport, Attleboro and Norton MA. If you require a new septic system, septic tank or any other septic work we are more than capable of assisting you and if you have any septic system questions or wish to schedule an appointment please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com
