Look After Your Septic System Bacteria Or You May Require A Septic Repair

Down to Earth Construction Services have found that many property owners, even those with septic systems, are not aware that for your septic system to work properly there needs to be a balance of bacteria which help breakdown waste so it can be processed. It is important to not disrupt this balance because then your septic system will not operate correctly. Important things to remember are:

  • Drain Openers – DO NOT use harsh chemical drain openers if you experience a clogged drain. Septic system owners should use an alternative solution: a 1:1:1 ratio of salt, baking soda and vinegar. Follow this solution with boiling water or use a drain snake to clear out the clogs. The chemicals that are used in today’s store-bought drain cleaners can cause serious problems within your septic system.
  • Cleaning Supplies – Chemicals can be damaging to your system as well. Instead of harsh cleansers, choose mild or natural cleaning supplies for your kitchen and bathrooms. Look for supplies that are “septic-safe” or that are marketed as being bio-degradable. These products will be approved for use in septic systems.
  • Antibacterial soaps and bleach – These can actually inhibit the enzymatic action that is required for the bacterial breakdown of solids within your septic tank. Add a laundry filter to your washing machine and use natural cleaning supplies whenever possible. If you have a water softener installed in your home, make sure that the salt recharge solution is redirected out of the septic tank.

We regularly attend septic repairs for customers who could have avoided a septic breakdown by following the above advice. Today we have septic repair appointments in Fall River, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Rochester and Marion MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please do contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Voluntary Septic Assessment in Sharon

Down to Earth Construction Services conducts hundreds of septic inspections each year for property owners who are selling their home or business and are not on town sewer. This is because in the state of Massachusetts a septic inspection is required:

“Within 2 years before a sale. If weather conditions prevent inspection at the time of a sale, the inspection must take place within 6 months afterward”

However not all inspections that we carryout are for people who are selling a property. We have a voluntary septic assessment today for a property owner in Sharon MA who wants to have a greater understanding of the condition of their septic system. As specified on the Mass Gov website:

“A system owner may choose voluntarily to have an assessment of the condition of the system even if there is no requirement for an inspection. Results of these voluntary assessments are solely for the use of the owner, and do not need to be submitted to local Boards of Health or MassDEP.”

We also have septic inspections today in Marion, Mattapoisett, Fall River, Mansfield and Rehoboth MA. Cesspool Replacement to North Attleboro

Down to Earth Construction Services are doing a cesspool replacement for a customer in North Attleboro, MA today. A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. Over time, when the drainage area around the leaching pool becomes saturated, additional pools may have to be dug to handle the volume. Cesspools must be treated to avoid harmful chemicals from forming and also to empty the pool which needs to be done regularly. This makes cesspools have high maintenance costs.

In Massachusetts Title 5 does not require Cesspools to be replaced:

“only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).” The Official Website of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs

We provide cesspool services, pump out services and cesspool replacement if requested. We have worked with customers in Attleboro, Bridgewater, Raynham, Franklin, Marion and Westport MA recently to either replace cesspools which was required because of Title 5 or requested for financial or environmental reasons by the property owner. We have also conducted cesspool services and pumping. If you need a cesspool service or pump out, cesspool replacement or if you have questions about our services please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Septic Repair in Norton MA

All Clear SepticDown to Earth Construction Services know more than anyone would ever usually wish to know about septic systems and the waste that goes into them. Today we are at a customer location in Norton MA providing a septic repair because the waste that they have introduced to their septic system has actually harmed it. Most people would not know that a septic system is more than just a tank for waste. They are a balanced system that uses bacteria to reduce sludge and sulfite buildup. Our client had been using a strong household cleaners that has upset this balance and lead to septic drain field problems. It is always a good idea to make sure that if you wish to use strong cleaners that they are labeled ‘septic safe’. There are are also homemade cleaners that can be very effective and not damage your septic system. Baking soda mixed with other all natural ingredients can be used as an environmentally safe and natural cleaner for your toilet, sinks, tub, and drains. Using baking soda instead of harsh chemical cleaners such as bleach will keep all that important bacteria from being killed off. The good bacteria in your septic system is necessary because it breaks down all the waste that comes through the pipes. Without the good bacteria you will end up with clogs, back-ups and odors that wear away at your septic tank and eventually cause a septic system emergency.

Using baking soda is very easy. You can mix about a 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons lemon to make your own natural cleaning agent. The baking soda will fizz up to help get the dirt and grime in your tub and drains.

We have other septic repair appointments scheduled today in Acushnet, New Bedford, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett and Marion MA. If you think you have a septic problem and may require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems or septic repairs please do contact us on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Drain Field Septic Repair Necessary In Rochester Due To Roots

Down to Earth Construction Services have expertise in many areas so that we can bring our customers the best possible septic services. For example we need landscaping and plant knowledge because septic systems, very often, are located in a customers yard with the landscaping and planting one would expect. However it is this landscaping that can cause problems. For example trees often have root systems that go far beyond what a homeowner expected when they first planted a tree seedling. Roots can infiltrate a septic drain field and really cause a lot of trouble. Roots even tend to grow toward drain fields because it is their job to find water for the tree. Today we are providing a drain field septic repair for a customer in Rochester MA whose tree roots have caused damage to the piping that is necessary for their leach field to work correctly. It is really advisable to only have grass growing on your leach field and not plant large bushes or trees on it to prevent these sorts or septic repairs being necessary. We also have other septic repair appointments in Mattapoisett, Marion, Fairhaven and Lakeville MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Septic Repairs Can Often Be Avoided By Using Your System Correctly

Down to Earth Construction Services know that septic systems have to be used correctly for them to continue to work efficiently and function as they should. A large part of this is is just knowing what is being introduced to your septic system and making sure that anything that goes into it is appropriate and wont adversely affect your system. All wastewater makes its way to your septic system and everything that goes into your sink, toilet, washing machine and shower/bath will also get introduced into your septic system. Keep the following items out of your septic system to prevent problems:

  • paper towels

  • kitty litter

  • plastics

  • cooking oils or grease

  • disposable diapers

  • feminine hygiene products

  • any/all latex products

  • hazardous chemicals, pesticides and latex-based paints

  • water purification back flush

It is important to note, however, that each system is unique. Check with your septic system installer or manufacturer for a complete list of items that should not make their way into your system for maximum efficiency. There are also many other things that should stay out of your system and there is no way that we can list all of the items. We have found toys, dead fish, clothing and jewellery in septic systems and all of these items were causing a problem that led to us investigating the cause. Simply put if you are not sure do not put it in your wastewater. We have septic repairs scheduled today in Carver, Middleboro, Marshfield, Marion and Rochester MA. One of these repairs is necessary because the homeowner was unaware of the large volume of sand that was being introduced to their septic system via the washing machine and shower by their teenage children. It is wise to make sure that your entire family and visitors know that you have a septic system and there are certain, easily followed guidelines to follow to make sure you do not require a septic repair from our talented technicians. If however you do suspect that you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services
