Down to Earth Construction Services Wishes Everyone A Happy Thanksgiving

Down to Earth Construction Services wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving for tomorrow. We know our customers are also looking forward to Thanksgiving and food preparation is well underway for Thanksgiving Meals. We would like to remind our customers that it is not a good idea to put any type of cooking oil, fat or grease down the sink where it can enter your septic system. Whilst a well maintained septic system can cope with small amounts of fat, oil and grease, such as natural body oils that go into your septic system when you shower, if you regularly introduce cooking fats, oils and grease into your septic system it could result in a septic system failure if left . Just remember when you are making your beautifully juicy turkey dinner do not pour the fat, oil or grease down your sink. We have been conducting Septic Repairs in Stoughton, Bridgewater, Middleboro, Carver, Taunton and Norton MA that could have been easily avoided with a little knowledge and preventative measures. If you have a question about your septic system or you need to schedule a septic repair please contact us on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

A Leach Field Under A Driveway Requires Excavation To Be Repaired

Down to Earth Construction Services have been contacted by a customer in Lakeville who has a leach field problem. Their home’s leach field has had a driveway installed that covers their leach field. As stated by the Massachusetts Official Website of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs:

“Impervious areas such as driveways or parking lots restrict air passing through the soils. In addition, the weight of the cars can compact the soil and may break distribution pipes. Lack of oxygen prevents the degradation of the septic tank effluent in the soil, and compaction reduces flow, making the system likely to clog and fail. Soil absorption systems which are placed under driveways are required, by 310 CMR 15.240 (7), to be vented to the atmosphere. Additional standards apply to system components in areas where automobile or other heavy equipment is anticipated.”

Their leach field does not have the venting as stated and compacting has resulted in distribution pipes breaking when large heavy vehicles were mistakenly parked on the driveway. Down to Earth Construction Services have the excavation equipment necessary for this septic repair and have the qualified operators that ensure that the repair is done correctly and with as little disruption as possible. We have other septic repairs scheduled today in Sharon, Mansfield, Taunton, Raynham and Norton MA. If you require a septic repair, excavation work, or have any questions please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Property owners need to be aware of all the liquids and solids that are introduced into their septic system. Some of these are obviously not a good idea including clothing, toys, diapers and household objects such as scouring pads. However some may be slightly less obvious including oils, fats and grease, ‘flushable’ wipes, sanitary items and some cleaning products. Be careful of what you introduce to your septic system and you may avoid some costly septic system repairs but if you do need a septic system repair appointment please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com. It is always inadvisable to wait to have a septic problem looked at and we can schedule appointments on short notice.

Experienced Diagnosing Septic System Problems and Repairing Them

Down to Earth Construction Services is experienced diagnosing problems and repairing septic systems and leach fields/ drainfields. We have been called in for a leach field repair in Acushnet MA which has been caused by irregular pumping of the septic system. A septic tank should be pumped every 3 – 5 years depending on various factors including water usage and tank size. If the tank fills up with an excess of solids, the wastewater will not have enough time to settle in the tank. These excess solids will then pass on to the leach field, where they will clog the drain lines and soil. The property owner called us concerned because they had liquid puddling on their leach field and sewage smells coming from the drainfield.

We also have other septic repairs today in Middleboro, Taunton, Freetown, Lakeville and East Bridgewater MA.

If you are concerned that you may need a septic system repair, leach field or drainfield repair, septic pump repair or d-box repair please do contact our Norton office to discuss your concerns and to make an appointment if necessary on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

All Clear Septic, septic system pump chamber

What is a Septic System?

All Clear Septic, septic system pump chamberDown to Earth Construction Services are always happy to answer questions customers have about their septic systems. Maybe the most important questions is ‘What is a septic system?

Septic systems are individual wastewater treatment systems (conventional septic systems, innovative/alternative (I/A) systems, or cesspools) that use the soil to treat small wastewater flows, usually from individual homes. They are typically used in rural or large lot settings where centralized wastewater treatment is impractical.

There are many types of septic systems in use today. While all systems are individually designed for each site, most systems are based on the same principles.

A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drainfield, all connected by pipes, called conveyance lines.

Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. This separation process is known as primary treatment. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and later removed, along with the lighter scum, by a professional septic tank pumper.

After partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. Drainage holes at the bottom of each line allow the wastewater to drain into gravel trenches for temporary storage. This effluent then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified (secondary treatment). A properly functioning septic system does not pollute the groundwater. – Mass. Gov website.

However even knowing what a septic system is and how it works it is always inadvisable to carry out septic repairs and maintenance yourself. A reputable septic company will be happy to answer questions and discuss concerns you have and make an appointment for a repair if necessary. Today we have septic repairs scheduled for customers in Attleboro, Norton, Seekonk and Dighton MA. If you have questions or concerns about your septic system or you want to make an appointment please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
