Septic Repairs including a D-Box Replacement

Down to Earth Construction Services have a septic repair scheduled today for a customer in East Bridgewater MA. We are replacing their Distribution Box (D-Box). A D-Box is exactly as it sounds its a box that moves, or distributes treated wastewater from your septic tank into your leach field or drain field. It must be level and installed correctly or your wastewater will not distribute evenly across your leach field and this can lead to over saturation and clogging which is not desirable. The d-box we are replacing was damaged when heavy equipment was mistakenly parked on top of it which broke and moved it. We have found that many property owners with septic systems while they know they have a septic tank sometimes forget that the leachfield and d-box are also essential parts of their septic system and must also be maintained. Here are a few simple tips to help you look after all parts of your septic system:

  • Minimize the use of the garbage disposal

  • Do not put grease down your drains

  • Spread loads of laundry out over time rather than doing multiple loads in a short period of time, and use liquid detergents rather than powdered detergents

  • Avoid excessively long showers

  • Avoid leaving tap water running when shaving, brushing teeth or doing other personal or household tasks

  • Do not flush medications, harmful chemicals, excessive amounts of bleach, harsh drain cleaners or degreasers

  • Have the septic tank pumped at least every three years

  • Do not add any septic systems cleaners, enzymes or additives

  • Remove water conditioning backwash discharges from the spetic system

  • Do not plant trees and shrubs over leach fields

  • Do not flush personal products, paper towels, wipes or diapers

  • Do not clean or rinse paint brushes in the sinks

  • Equip all hot tubs, spas, whirlpool baths, etcetera with drain limiting valves that will only allow five gallons per minute to drain from fixture

  • Do not drive vehicles over leach fields

We also have septic repairs scheduled in Stoughton, Canton, Marshfield and Norton MA and some of these repairs could have been avoided by following the above advice. If you have any questions about your septic system or if you need a septic repair please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

If Your Property Is Not On Town Sewer A Septic Service Could Take Your Septic Maintenance Concerns Away

Down to Earth Construction Services know that many people when they hear the word ‘sewer’ either think of old, large, dank, dark and smelly sewer systems under some city in Europe or adolescent turtles with unlikely names fighting bad guys through the sewer tunnel system. Neither image is particularly accurate for sewer systems in Massachusetts which service many homes across the state. However homes and properties that are not on the town sewer system still need to process their wastewater and the solution is an individual septic system. If you buy a property with a septic system and have never had one before this can be a daunting prospect. However septic services provided by Down to Earth Construction Services are designed to give homeowners peace of mind because you then know that your system is being properly checked, maintained and monitored. This means that you do not have to worry about unexpected repairs or maintenance because we will take care of your septic system for you so repairs are much less likely to be necessary and problems will be located before they become a big concern. We schedule septic services for our customers on maintenance contracts on a quarterly, biannual or annual basis depending on their septic system and the use that it gets. Today we have septic service appointments in Dighton, Taunton, Berkley, Middleboro and Norton MA. If you would be interested in septic services or if you have questions please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com

Spring is on its way and property owners are starting to think about repairs and maintenance that have been put off over the winter. However if you have a concern about your septic system it is wise to have it addressed immediately and not leave it until your springtime maintenance. Indicators that you may have a septic problem include:

  • Pipe Gurgling Sounds

  • Toilet Flushing Issues

  • Water Backup

  • Bad Odors

  • Greener Grass

  • Patches of Standing Water

If you have noticed one or more of these signs at your property please do consider calling to discuss your concerns with our experienced technicians. If a septic problem is ignored it is very unlikely to go away on its own and will quite possibly become a much larger and more expensive repair if left. Today we have septic repair appointments in Plainville, North Attleboro, Wrentham and Foxboro MA. Septic System Inspections in Massachussetts

Down to Earth Construction Services have Massachusetts licensed septic inspectors and have been carrying out thorough and reliable septic system inspections in this region for over 25 years.  As stated by the Mass Gov Website Title 5 Septic Inspections are required:

  • Within 2 years before a sale. If weather conditions prevent inspection at the time of a sale, the inspection must take place within 6 months afterward.

  • When there is a proposed change to the facility which requires a building or occupancy permit.

  • Any change in the footprint of a building, to make sure that new building construction will not take place on top of any system components or on the system’s reserve area.

  • For large systems with a design flow of 10,000 to 15,000 gallons per day or more at full build-out, on the basin schedule shown in 310 CMR 15.301(6), and every five years thereafter.

  • Every 3 years for shared systems.

  • When the property is divided, or ownership of 2 or more properties is combined.

  • When MassDEP or the local Board of Health orders an inspection.

The majority of our inspections are for a property transfer, often scheduled by the seller but sometimes we provide an inspection for the buyer of a home with a septic system. Today we have septic system inspections scheduled in Wayland, Canton, Stoughton, Sharon and Holliston MA and most are for property transfers but one is for a voluntary assessment. Mass Gov States that”

“A system owner may choose voluntarily to have an assessment of the condition of the system even if there is no requirement for an inspection. Results of these voluntary assessments are solely for the use of the owner, and do not need to be submitted to local Boards of Health or MassDEP.”

For more information see: https://www.mass.gov/guides/buying-or-selling-property-with-a-septic-system

Property owners are likely to schedule a voluntary assessment of their septic system because the want to know its condition and see if maintenance or repairs are required. This is important because failing systems can:

  • cause a serious health threat to your family and neighbors,

  • degrade the environment, especially lakes, streams and groundwater,

  • reduce the value of your property,

  • be very expensive to repair,

  • and put thousands of water supply users at risk if you live in a public water supply watershed and fail to maintain your system

If you need to schedule a septic system inspection or assessment, for any reason, or if you have questions about septic inspections please do contact us at our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Repairs Can Prevent a Failing Septic System Causing Serious Problems

Down to Earth Construction Services know that although there are many types of septic systems in use today they are all designed for each site and mostly work on the same principles. A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drain field, all connected by pipes, called conveyance lines. Your home’s wastewater flows into your septic tank where it is held and solids sink to the bottom and lighter scum floats to the top. The solids and scum are decomposed by bacteria and periodically pumped. The treated wastewater or effluent flows through the distribution box into your drain field or leach field where it then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified (secondary treatment). A properly functioning septic system does not pollute the groundwater. However a failing septic system can have many unpleasant repercussions as stated on the Mass Gov website:

“Failing systems can

  • cause a serious health threat to your family and neighbors,
  • degrade the environment, especially lakes, streams and groundwater,
  • reduce the value of your property,
  • be very expensive to repair,
  • and put thousands of water supply users at risk if you live in a public water supply watershed and fail to maintain your system.”

For more information see: https://www.mass.gov/guides/caring-for-your-septic-system

Therefore if you suspect your septic system is not operating correctly or you have concerns about your system do not put off contacting a professional. Today we have septic repair appointments in Plainville, North Attleboro, Mansfield and Wrentham MA. If you need to schedule a septic repair or if you have any questions or concerns about your septic system please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Alarms Installed and Investigated

Down to Earth Construction Services are experienced working with septic systems and because we have extensive knowledge of septic systems we can use this to diagnose septic problems to find the source of the issue and to carry out a septic repair when required. Today we are installing a septic alarm for a customer in Lakeville MA who wants to have this safeguard inplace to notify them if they have a septic issue that needs to be addressed. This septic alarm is required because their septic system has a septic pump which moves wastewater from the septic tank to the drain field or leach field. If the septic pump is not operating correctly the septic alarm will turn on. We also have an appointment for a customer in Rochester MA who has noticed that their septic alarm is on and they need a septic specialist to locate the problem and fix their septic system. We have extensive experience repairing and replacing septic pumps including Blue Diamond, Hiblow and FujiClean pumps. If you require a septic repair, septic improvement or have any questions about your septic system or septic alarms please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
