Voluntary Septic Assessments Provide Confidential Information On Your Septic System

Down To Earth Construction Services conduct many septic inspections for people who are selling or sometimes buying property with a septic system. We also provide septic inspections for Condominium Buildings that are required to have septic inspections every 3 years. We also, however, provide voluntary septic assessments for property owners who are not ‘required’ to have an inspection but choose to have an assessment because they want to know the condition of their septic system. Many property owners are unaware that they have the ability to hire a licensed inspector to perform confidential voluntary septic assessments of their septic system. These inspections are completed just as they would be according to the Title 5 Inspections required by the State of Massachusetts, but the findings are NOT reported to any other person, municipality or office outside of the homeowner. Once the inspection is complete, the homeowner will receive a thorough report from Down to Earth Construction Services along with an assessment of the findings and some recommendations on how to properly maintain or repair their septic system. The recommendations provided by Down to Earth Construction Services are designed to increase longevity and prevent future issues, such as property damage, high cost repairs or system replacement. Today we are carrying out a voluntary septic assessment for a homeowner in Norton MA. We also have ‘regular’ Title 5 Septic Inspections in Dighton, Carver, Taunton and Bridgewater MA. If you require a septic inspection or assessment or if you have any questions about septic systems please do contact our office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Winter Weather Can Create Septic Problems

Down to Earth Construction Services know, just like all other New Englanders, that storms and weather are a part of living in this region. However the severe winter storms can result in property damage which can affect septic systems just like other parts of your property. Just like with other parts of your home or business it is never wise to ignore signs of septic problems and hope it might go away. Signs of a septic issue can include:

  • All of the drains from the house are slow
  • There is a persistent wet area over the leach field
  • Sewage is surfacing in the area of the septic tank or distribution box
  • There is sewage seeping through the foundation
  • The liquid level in the leach field is at the top of the crushed rock layer, the chambers or other underground structures
  • The vegetation over the leach field is greener and more lush than over adjacent areas in the yard
  • There is sewage odor in the yard at times or constantly
  • There is flow back from the leach field when the septic tank is pumped
  • The septic tank needs to be pumped frequently
  • The septic tank discharge baffle is damaged or missing
  • Rain water seems to take longer to disappear over the leach field than over adjacent areas in the yard
  • Well water is contaminated

Today we have septic repairs scheduled for customers in Raynham, Dighton, Berkley, Taunton and Bridgewater MA and some of these septic problems could have been avoided if the property owner had been more aware of the signs to look for that indicate a potential septic issue. If you require a septic repair or if you have concerns that you wish to discuss please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Avoid Septic Repairs This Thanksgiving By Not Pouring Grease, Oil and Fat Down Your Sink

Down to Earth Construction Services are all looking forward to Thanksgiving and the great food and time with our family and friends that goes alongside this holiday. We know our customers are also looking forward to Thanksgiving and food preparation is well underway for Thanksgiving Meals. We would like to remind our customers that it is not a good idea to put any type of cooking oil, fat or grease down the sink where it can enter your septic system. Whilst a well maintained septic system can cope with small amounts of fat, oil and grease, such as natural body oils that go into your septic system when you shower, if you regularly introduce cooking fats, oils and grease into your septic system it could result in a septic system failure if left. Just remember when you are making your beautifully juicy turkey dinner do not pour the fat, oil or grease down your sink. We have been conducting septic repairs in Bridgewater, Raynham, Stoughton, Sharon and Canton MA that could have been easily avoided with a little knowledge and preventative measures. If you have a question about your septic system or you need to schedule a septic repair please contact us on 508-622-5759 or visit http://downtoearthconst.com/septic-services/

Cesspool Replacement to North Attleboro

Down to Earth Construction Services are doing a cesspool replacement for a customer in North Attleboro, MA today. A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. Over time, when the drainage area around the leaching pool becomes saturated, additional pools may have to be dug to handle the volume. Cesspools must be treated to avoid harmful chemicals from forming and also to empty the pool which needs to be done regularly. This makes cesspools have high maintenance costs.

In Massachusetts Title 5 does not require Cesspools to be replaced:

“only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).” The Official Website of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs

We provide cesspool services, pump out services and cesspool replacement if requested. We have worked with customers in Attleboro, Bridgewater, Raynham, Franklin, Marion and Westport MA recently to either replace cesspools which was required because of Title 5 or requested for financial or environmental reasons by the property owner. We have also conducted cesspool services and pumping. If you need a cesspool service or pump out, cesspool replacement or if you have questions about our services please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Septic Alarm installed in Mansfield MA

Down To Earth Construction Services are installing a septic alarm for a customer in Mansfield, MA today. Many modern and alternative septic systems have alarms to notify the homeowner of a potential problem. Though it can be annoying when the system alarms and you are forced to think about your septic system, this could prevent the system from backing up into your house. A high water alarm is caused by either too much water going into the tank or not enough going out. A high water alarm if not properly addressed will cause septic waste to ultimately back up into your house, though that may occur after your drainfield is fully damaged. An alarm could also be to notify you that your septic pump has failed. The basic design of a septic tank will only work if the sludge is not too thick on the bottom and the grease and scum is not too thick on top, and if the flow to the tank is not excessive. If there is too much waste on the bottom of the tank or too much water flowing to the tank, there will not be enough time for the solids and liquids to settle out before the tank starts releasing water containing large amounts of fecal waste to the drain field. The fecal waste will over time clog the drainfield. Also, if there is too much grease and scum floating on top, the scum will be released to the drainfield. A septic system is not a trash can. Don’t put dental floss, feminine hygiene products, condoms, diapers, cotton swabs, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, cat litter, paper towels, latex paint, pesticides, or other hazardous chemicals into your system because they can end up clogging the filter and/or lines if carried from the tank. Therefore although it can be annoying a septic alarm is essential to give you advance warning that you have a septic problem. Our customer has wisely chosen to install a septic alarm to ensure that they have advance warning of a septic problem. We have provided other septic system improvements including the addition of risers and covers to customers in Norton, Attleboro, Lakeville and Bridgewater recently. If you would be interested in having a septic alarm installed, if you have a septic alarm going off or would be interested in other septic system improvements please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Septic Repair To Replace Septic Tank Baffles In Middleboro MA

Down to Earth Construction Services have been contacted by a a property owner in Middleboro MA who needs a septic repair which entails having their septic tank baffles replaced. Broken septic tank baffles result from sulfuric acid eating away at concrete baffles or rust eating away at steel baffles. A septic tank has an inlet and outlet baffle. Usually these baffles are made from concrete and are part of the tank construction. The inlet baffle slows the flow of liquid entering the tank and decreases the turbulence allowing the solids to settle in the bottom of the tank. The outlet baffle helps to retain the solids and prevent them from leaving the tank and travelling to your drain field. A tank without an outlet baffle can compromise the longevity of your septic system and cause premature failure. We are experienced working with all parts and types of septic system so can quickly and with minimum disruption replace our client’s damaged baffles. We also have other septic repair appointments scheduled today in Carver, Bridgewater, Taunton, Raynham and Norton MA. If you require a septic repair or have questions about your septic system please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services
