Leach Field Repair In Rochester MA Necessary

Down to Earth Construction Services know that in the beautiful New England Summer many people are out in their yards planting and gardening. Unfortunately when you are planting large shrubs or trees in your yard if you do so on your leach field you can unknowingly create a septic problem. The roots and sometimes weight of plants can actually damage your drain field which means that your septic system is no longer working correctly.  Septic systems do an amazing job of returning liquids to the soil for purification but the whole system needs to be functioning correctly for this to happen. When septic system failure occurs, the conditions they create are dangerous. These can include:

  • Hazardous sewage surfacing in yard

  • Health hazards to children and pets

  • Noxious odors over large areas

  • Polluted streams and ponds

  • Sewage back-up in buildings

  • Contaminated wells

  • Breeding areas for mosquitoes

Today we are at a customer’s home in Rochester, MA repairing their leach field which has been damaged when they planed an orchard over it last year. The roots combined with heavy machinery being parked on the drainfield during construction have both lead to the structural collapse of the leach field piping. A strong sewage odor and dampness over their yard was luckily a sign of a septic problem that the homeowners did not ignore. We can repair the damage so they do not have to worry about the consequences of an inoperative septic system. We also have other septic repairs scheduled today in Rochester, Seekonk, Fairhaven, Fall River and Mattapoisett MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please do call us at our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Systems Are Easily Maintained With Septic Services

Down to Earth Construction Services know that if you have never owned a property with a septic system the unknown can be a bit daunting. However a septic system or ‘on-site sewage system’ is a pretty simple and not an uncommon way for a property to process its own waste. A typical septic system consists of a septic tank and a drainfield. All water runs out of your house from one main drainage pipe into a septic tank which is a buried, water-tight container usually made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene. Its job is to hold the wastewater long enough to allow solids to settle down to the bottom which forms a sludge, while the oil and grease floats to the top as scum. Compartments in the tank and a T-shaped outlet prevent the sludge and scum from leaving the tank and traveling into the drainfield area. The liquid wastewater, or effluent, then exits the tank into the drainfield. Finally the wastewater percolates into the soil, naturally removing harmful bacteria, viruses, and nutrients. Many homes in New England have their own septic system and they are not all way out in the countryside. As more and more property has been built it has not all been connected upto town sewer so many homes that are in towns and cities have their own septic systems. If you are unsure about septic system maintenance or just don’t want to have to worry about it a good solution may be a septic service plan. Septic services are an ideal way for property owners to be totally confident that their septic system maintenance is being done without have to concern themselves about it. We maintain, check and monitor the septic system and notify our customer if we find anything that may be a problem in the future which can prevent small septic problems becoming large and expensive septic failures. Today we have septic services scheduled in Freetown, Seekonk, Swansea, Marion, Fairhaven and Fall River MA. If you wish to schedule a septic service or if you have any questions about septic services please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

When Do You Need A Title 5 Septic Inspection?

Down to Earth Construction Services has Title 5 Septic Inspections scheduled for customers today in Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Fall River, Marion and Freetown MA.

Massachusetts requires that you have a Title 5 Septic Inspection in the following instances:

  • Within 2 years before a sale. If weather conditions prevent inspection at the time of a sale, the inspection must take place within 6 months afterward.

  • When there is a proposed change to the facility which requires a building or occupancy permit.

  • Any change in the footprint of a building, to make sure that new building construction will not take place on top of any system components or on the system’s reserve area.

  • For large systems with a design flow of 10,000 to 15,000 gallons per day or more at full build-out, on the basin schedule shown in 310 CMR 15.301(6), and every five years thereafter.

  • Every 3 years for shared systems.

  • When the property is divided, or ownership of 2 or more properties is combined.

  • When MassDEP or the local Board of Health orders an inspection

For more information see https://www.mass.gov/guides/buying-or-selling-property-with-a-septic-system

A large portion of the inspections that we conduct are for property owners who are selling their property which has a septic system, either a commercial or residential. This is because most sellers have not bought their property in the last two years so do not have a current Title 5 Inspection for their property. The good news is that once it has been done it is valid for 2 years so once you have decided you are selling your property it is always a good idea to have the inspection done early in the sale process. You know it is likely that you will sell in two years so it will remain current and you will not have to worry about it causing delays later when you have sale deadlines. An inspection may highlight a problem and you will have time to fix it and once your property has passed its septic inspection that is another selling point. If you require a Title 5 Septic inspection, for any reason, or have questions about septic inspections or septic systems please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Repairs Including a D-Box Replacement

Down to Earth Construction Services are regularly called out to client properties to provide septic system repairs. Today we have a d-box replacement for a customer in Attleboro MA. The d-box, or distribution box, essentially connects the septic tank to your leach field or drain field. It ensures that the separated effluent is evenly ‘distributed’ over your leach field where it harmlessly enters your soil. If your d-box is broken or incorrectly installed this process will not happen correctly which can result in bad smells or puddling in your yard resulting from your waste not being treated correctly. You could also see back ups in your interior plumbing, sewage smells or slow running drains. All of these are indicators that you have a septic problem which you should have addressed immediately. A small septic problem can quickly become a large and expensive septic repair or failure if it is ignored. We also have septic repairs today in Seekonk, Fall River, Swansea and Rehoboth MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com

Cesspool Maintenance Is Important To Ensure You Do Not Pollute Your Environment

Down to Earth Construction Services has cesspool maintenance appointments today in Mattapoisett, Marion, Fairhaven, Swansea, Fall River and Freetown MA. A cesspool is any pit or container that receives wastewater from a house or building. The term “cesspool” is usually used to refer to an open pit that is lined with rocks or concrete, but an underground tank or holding container that is not connected to a drainfield can also be defined as a cesspool. The main function of cesspools is the storage of wastewater. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. Cesspools are only found servicing older properties because other more efficient means of waste treatment are now available. We provide cesspool services and repairs and have also provided cesspool replacement when required. We recently replaced a cesspool for a customer in Southborough MA because it was starting to pollute the local groundwater. Ongoing cesspool maintenance by having it serviced and having pumpouts is especially important because to sustain the integrity of the environment you need to ensure your cesspool is operating correctly and the surrounding area is not saturated. If you have any questions about cesspools or wish to schedule a cesspool service please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Repairs Including an Outlet Baffle and D-Box Repair

Down to Earth Construction Services have experience with all parts of a septic system and today have a septic repair scheduled which is specifically to repair an outlet baffle and D-Box for a customer in Mattapoisett. It is essential that all parts of a septic system are working correctly to ensure that the entire system is doing the job that it is supposed to including the septic tank, d-box, leach field and outlet baffle. A septic system that is failing is a large problem which can cause a serious health threat to your family and neighbors, degrade the environment, especially lakes, streams and groundwater, reduce the value of your property, be very expensive to repair and put thousands of water supply users at risk if you live in a public water supply watershed and fail to maintain your system. If you have a septic system you should be observant and if you notice signs that you have a septic problem you should not ignore them in the hope that the problem will fix itself. A septic problem if left will not get better and while you procrastinate it can become a much larger, more difficult and more expensive problem to fix. Signs that you could have a septic problem are:

  • sewage surfacing over the drainfield (especially after storms)

  • sewage back-ups in the house

  • lush, green growth over the drainfield

  • slow draining toilets or drains

  • sewage odors

Today we also have septic repair appointments for customers in Marion, Fall River, Fairhaven, Freetown and Acushnet MA. If you think that you may have a septic problem or have questions about your septic system please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Inspections For Property Sales And Property Renovations

Down to Earth Construction Services has hundreds of septic inspections scheduled each year, often with property owners who have a septic system and need their system to be inspected before they can proceed with the sale of that property. However we do have inspections scheduled for other reasons. Today we have septic inspections scheduled in Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, Fall River, Acushnet and Swansea MA and one of those is not for a client who is selling their property. Instead they have been renovating their property and require an inspection because their extensive renovations require a building permit. As explained on the Mas Gov Website:

‘These situations require a system inspection only if the modification requires a building permit or occupancy permit. For example:

  • adding a bedroom to a house

  • adding seats to a restaurant

  • changing the type of business operating at a commercial location.

Check with your Building Department or Board of Health to find out if your modification meets these requirements.

Any change in the footprint of a building also requires an inspection to determine the location of the system, to ensure that construction will not be located on top of any system components or on the reserve area. Check with your local Board of Health.’
