Safety Is A Priority For Down To Earth Construction Services When Providing Our Septic Services

Down to Earth Construction Services are committed to both the safety of our technicians and customers. We therefore hold monthly safety meetings with our safety manager and our technicians to discuss safety concerns and questions. We also cover any accidents or near misses and how to prevent future issues. We discuss the equipment that is being ordered including warning tape and safety glasses and training that has been completed including orientation safety training and confined space training. We also always have an in depth safety topic to discuss which this month was driving which is especially pertinent at this time of year with school buses being back on the road, children walking and cycling to school and people rushing to get children to school on time. We covered pedestrian safety, school bus safety and reiterated company driving policies. Our technicians are on the road daily going from one job site to another often early in the morning or finishing late, in unfamiliar locations and in residential neighbourhoods so we want to ensure that they, and our customers, are safe. Today we have technicians providing septic services throughout the region from Clinton to Marshfield and Wayland to Fairhaven. They provide essential septic repairs, septic services, septic inspections and septic installations to our customers so we want them to arrive in a safe and timely manner. Cesspool Replacement in Norton MA

Down To Earth Construction Services are providing a cesspool replacement for a customer in Norton, MA today. A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. Over time, when the drainage area around the leaching pool becomes saturated, additional pools may have to be dug to handle the volume. Cesspools must be treated to avoid harmful chemicals from forming and also to empty the pool which needs to be done regularly. This makes cesspools have high maintenance costs.

In Massachusetts Title 5 does not require Cesspools to be replaced:

“only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).” For more information see https://www.mass.gov/service-details/title-5-faq

We provide cesspool services, pump out services and cesspool replacement if requested. We have worked with customers in Bellingham, Blackstone, Marshfield and Attleboro, MA recently to either replace cesspools which was required because of Title 5 or requested for financial or environmental reasons by the property owner. We have also conducted cesspool services and pumping.

If your property has a cesspool make sure that you work with a company that has extensive experience working with cesspools in Massachusetts. If you have any questions or need to arrange an appointment please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com

It’s Summer And We Are Busy With Septic Repairs

Down to Earth Construction Services can’t believe that it’s the middle of summer already. This year seems to be flying by and our technicians are busier than ever. Unfortunately a lot of our repair call outs are from homeowners who have unknowingly caused their septic system problem. Where possible we try to educate home owners in the best way to use their septic system to try to prevent future problems while also finding the cause of the septic problem and fixing it. A few suggestions to keep your septic system working correctly are:

  • Pumping. Septic tanks generally should be pumped out every three to five years, depending on how regularly the system is used and/or how many people are using it. Regular pumping ensures that solids will not flow from the septic tank into the drainfield.

  • Use less water. Reducing the amount of wastewater entering your on-site sewage system may increase its lifespan. Excessive water use is a main cause of system failure. Use water-saving bathroom and kitchen fixtures (faucets, showers, toilets). Run and drain appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, one at a time. Spread laundry over the entire week and avoid partial loads. Fix all faucet and toilet leaks promptly.

  • Limit garbage disposal use. A garbage disposal adds solids and grease to your system, which could lead to drainfield failure.

  • Direct water from downspouts and roofs away from the drainfield. Additional water from these sources may prevent your drainfield from working properly.

  • Install risers for easier access. Risers from the tank lids to the soil surface make maintenance easier.

  • Don’t use septic tank additives or “miracle” system cleaners. Some of these chemicals can actually harm your system by allowing solids to flow into and clog the drainfield. The chemicals can also contaminate ground and surface water.

  • Don’t dispose of water from hot tubs into your septic system. Large volumes of water are harmful to the system, and the chlorine can destroy important bacteria in the system.

  • Don’t flush solid wastes into the system. These include diapers, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, tampons, condoms, and grease.

  • Don’t put strong chemicals, such as cleaning products, down the drain. Household chemicals — such as drain cleaners, paint thinners and floor cleaners — can destroy important bacteria in your septic tank and contaminate ground and surface water. Laundry additives like bleach and fabric softener can also have a negative effect on the bacteria in your tank.

  • Don’t construct patios, carports or use landscape plastic over the drainfield. Grass is the best cover for your septic tank and drainfield. Soil compaction and paving prevent oxygen from getting into the soil. This oxygen is needed by bacteria to break down and treat sewage.

  • Don’t park cars, trucks or heavy machinery on the septic tank and drainfield areas. The weight can lead to crushed or broken pipes and soil compaction. Compacted soils cannot absorb water from the drainfield. A broken underground pipe can lead to an expensive repair.

Today we have septic repair appointments scheduled for customers in Carver, Middleboro, Marshfield, Canton, Holliston and Lakeville MA. Title 5 Septic Inspections When you Are Buying Or Selling A Home Do Not Need To Be Another Problem

Down To Earth Construction Services knows that purchasing a home is an incredibly stressful thing to do. Whether it is your first home or your fifteenth there is always a lot of moving parts to coordinate and this is doubly true if you are also selling a property at the same time. If the property your are buying or selling also has a septic system you are required in Massachusetts to have a Title 5 Septic Inspection on that system before Title transfer can take place. As stated on the Mas Gov website:

“The property owner or operator is responsible for arranging the inspection. The buyer and seller may change the responsibility for arranging the inspection prior to title transfer, provided that this change is put in writing and that the inspection still occurs within the specified timeframes.

The purpose of the inspection is to determine if the system in its current condition can protect public health and the environment. The inspection does not guarantee that the system will continue to function adequately, or that the system will not fail at a later date. This is particularly important if you plan to increase the flow to the system.

The inspection includes determining the location and condition of cesspools, septic tanks and distribution boxes. Often, this will not require extensive excavation.”

We know that when you are selling or buying a property schedules have to be kept and hold ups can cause repercussions with sales and purchases. That is why we would always recommend that if you are selling a home with a septic system that you have your Title 5 Septic Inspection done as soon as possible. You do not need to wait until you have a buyer. The inspection will be valid for two years and once your system has passed the inspection you can stop your septic from being a cause of concern or negative for prospective buyers. Today we have Title Septic 5 Inspections in Middleboro, East Bridgewater, Marshfield, Carver, Lakeville and Norton MA. If you require a Title 5 Inspection or if you have any questions about septic inspections or septic systems please do contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Repairs including a D-Box Replacement

Down to Earth Construction Services have a septic repair scheduled today for a customer in East Bridgewater MA. We are replacing their Distribution Box (D-Box). A D-Box is exactly as it sounds its a box that moves, or distributes treated wastewater from your septic tank into your leach field or drain field. It must be level and installed correctly or your wastewater will not distribute evenly across your leach field and this can lead to over saturation and clogging which is not desirable. The d-box we are replacing was damaged when heavy equipment was mistakenly parked on top of it which broke and moved it. We have found that many property owners with septic systems while they know they have a septic tank sometimes forget that the leachfield and d-box are also essential parts of their septic system and must also be maintained. Here are a few simple tips to help you look after all parts of your septic system:

  • Minimize the use of the garbage disposal

  • Do not put grease down your drains

  • Spread loads of laundry out over time rather than doing multiple loads in a short period of time, and use liquid detergents rather than powdered detergents

  • Avoid excessively long showers

  • Avoid leaving tap water running when shaving, brushing teeth or doing other personal or household tasks

  • Do not flush medications, harmful chemicals, excessive amounts of bleach, harsh drain cleaners or degreasers

  • Have the septic tank pumped at least every three years

  • Do not add any septic systems cleaners, enzymes or additives

  • Remove water conditioning backwash discharges from the spetic system

  • Do not plant trees and shrubs over leach fields

  • Do not flush personal products, paper towels, wipes or diapers

  • Do not clean or rinse paint brushes in the sinks

  • Equip all hot tubs, spas, whirlpool baths, etcetera with drain limiting valves that will only allow five gallons per minute to drain from fixture

  • Do not drive vehicles over leach fields

We also have septic repairs scheduled in Stoughton, Canton, Marshfield and Norton MA and some of these repairs could have been avoided by following the above advice. If you have any questions about your septic system or if you need a septic repair please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
