Down To Earth Construction Services Provide Septic Engineering Services

Down to Earth Construction Services offer so much more than septic ‘construction’. While we certainly use our experience in this area to provide excavation, septic installation and extensive repairs to septic systems we also have the skills and knowledge for septic engineering services such as providing septic designs, soil evaluations, construction layouts and perc tests. Today we have a perc test, or percolation test, for a customer in Norton MA. A perc test evaluates the rate at which water drains through soil. This is extremely important to know before you install a septic system because you need to know the level of liquid absorption into the soil in order to design the system which includes the leach field or drain field, where wastewater percolates back into the soil after the solids have settled into the septic tank. The typical size of a drain field is determined by the expected volume of waste water to be discharged from the septic system (which is usually estimated based on the size of the proposed building) and of course the speed at which the liquid can drain which is determined by the perc test is essential information. The perc test is conducted by drilling or digging a hole in the ground, pouring water into the hole and then observing the rate at which the water is absorbed into the soil. We have provided other septic engineering services to customers throughout the region including recently in Marshfield, West Bridgewater and Berlin MA. If you require septic engineering services or if you have any questions regarding for septic system please do contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Septic Installation in Attleboro MA

Down to Earth Construction Services provide septic system installations for many property owners for a variety of reasons. Today we have a septic installation for a customer in Attleboro MA who needs a larger septic system because they are putting an addition, which includes 2 bedrooms, onto their home. Their older home has a septic system that was put in many years ago and was not designed to handle the volume of wastewater that maybe created with the addition of extra bedrooms. Of course it is not always the case that more bedrooms equates to more people using the system but that is the measure that is used to determine if a septic system should be upgraded or replaced. Your property must have a septic system that is equal to the number of bedrooms that you have to ensure that it can cope with the wastewater that will enter it. All wastewater is processed so that does not just include toilets but that also showers, baths, dishwashers and washing machines. Older septic systems are sometimes overwhelmed even when the number of bedrooms has not increased if more than the expected people are living or just visiting the home or larger appliances are bought and used at the same time or repeatedly used on the same day. It is always wise to be aware of the volume of wastewater that you are introducing to your septic system and if possible take measures such as taking shorter showers or doing your washing over an entire week rather than just on one day. However if you find that you are having septic issues that you can not solve with these solutions we are always happy to make suggestions or discuss a septic upgrade or replacement. We have recently installed new and upgraded septic systems for customers in Southborough, Marshfield and Norton MA. If you require a septic system upgrade or a septic installation or if you have any questions about your septic system please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Septic Repairs Can Often Be Avoided By Using Your System Correctly

Down to Earth Construction Services know that septic systems have to be used correctly for them to continue to work efficiently and function as they should. A large part of this is is just knowing what is being introduced to your septic system and making sure that anything that goes into it is appropriate and wont adversely affect your system. All wastewater makes its way to your septic system and everything that goes into your sink, toilet, washing machine and shower/bath will also get introduced into your septic system. Keep the following items out of your septic system to prevent problems:

  • paper towels

  • kitty litter

  • plastics

  • cooking oils or grease

  • disposable diapers

  • feminine hygiene products

  • any/all latex products

  • hazardous chemicals, pesticides and latex-based paints

  • water purification back flush

It is important to note, however, that each system is unique. Check with your septic system installer or manufacturer for a complete list of items that should not make their way into your system for maximum efficiency. There are also many other things that should stay out of your system and there is no way that we can list all of the items. We have found toys, dead fish, clothing and jewellery in septic systems and all of these items were causing a problem that led to us investigating the cause. Simply put if you are not sure do not put it in your wastewater. We have septic repairs scheduled today in Carver, Middleboro, Marshfield, Marion and Rochester MA. One of these repairs is necessary because the homeowner was unaware of the large volume of sand that was being introduced to their septic system via the washing machine and shower by their teenage children. It is wise to make sure that your entire family and visitors know that you have a septic system and there are certain, easily followed guidelines to follow to make sure you do not require a septic repair from our talented technicians. If however you do suspect that you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

A Failing Leach Field Can Be Restored By the White Knight™ Microbial Inoculator/Generator

Down to Earth Construction Services were approached by a property owner in Norton, MA who needed a solution for their failing leach field. We will restore the function of their leach field or drain field with the White Knight system.

In nature, oxygen-using (aerobic) bacteria in the soil consume non-living organic material. This is the process nature uses to “recycle” wastes. We install the White Knight™ Microbial Inoculator/Generator in the septic tank to create an oxygen rich environment and cultivate an extensive colony of these same soil bacteria.

The result is nearly complete consumption of the organic materials entering the septic tank. At the same time, the bacteria are carried into the leach field where they consume the organic material that has accumulated in the underlying soil. The leach field regains and/or maintains its capacity to deliver effluent to the soil for purification.

The White Knight™ advantage includes:

  • An installation costs thousands of dollars less than that of a replacement leach field
  • Minimal disruption to existing landscape
  • Protection of the environment
  • Significantly longer tank pumping interval
  • Conservation of natural resources
  • 100% component and limited lifetime performance warranty

We have successfully used this system throughout the region to restore leach fields from Wayland to Upton to Fairhaven and Marshfield MA.

The White Knight™ Microbial Inoculator/Generator can be used to:

  • Improve the function of a marginally operating drain field
  • Restore the function of a totally failing leach field
  • Improve the quality of effluent returning to the soil and ground water
  • Reduce the amount of nitrate moving into the environment
  • Reduce the size of a leach field required for new building construction
  • Expand the size of existing structures without expanding the leach field

If you want to have a White Knight Septic Installation or have questions please do contact our Norton, MA office on 508-622-5759 or visit Down to Earth Construction Services

Cesspool Replacement in Norton MA

Down To Earth Construction Services are providing a cesspool replacement for a customer in Norton, MA today. A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. Over time, when the drainage area around the leaching pool becomes saturated, additional pools may have to be dug to handle the volume. Cesspools must be treated to avoid harmful chemicals from forming and also to empty the pool which needs to be done regularly. This makes cesspools have high maintenance costs.

In Massachusetts Title 5 does not require Cesspools to be replaced:

“only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded (310 CMR 15.303). Also, cesspools must be upgraded prior to an increase in design flow (e.g., the addition of a bedroom to a home or seats to a restaurant).” For more information see https://www.mass.gov/service-details/title-5-faq

We provide cesspool services, pump out services and cesspool replacement if requested. We have worked with customers in Bellingham, Blackstone, Marshfield and Attleboro, MA recently to either replace cesspools which was required because of Title 5 or requested for financial or environmental reasons by the property owner. We have also conducted cesspool services and pumping.

If your property has a cesspool make sure that you work with a company that has extensive experience working with cesspools in Massachusetts. If you have any questions or need to arrange an appointment please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com

It’s Summer And We Are Busy With Septic Repairs

Down to Earth Construction Services can’t believe that it’s the middle of summer already. This year seems to be flying by and our technicians are busier than ever. Unfortunately a lot of our repair call outs are from homeowners who have unknowingly caused their septic system problem. Where possible we try to educate home owners in the best way to use their septic system to try to prevent future problems while also finding the cause of the septic problem and fixing it. A few suggestions to keep your septic system working correctly are:

  • Pumping. Septic tanks generally should be pumped out every three to five years, depending on how regularly the system is used and/or how many people are using it. Regular pumping ensures that solids will not flow from the septic tank into the drainfield.

  • Use less water. Reducing the amount of wastewater entering your on-site sewage system may increase its lifespan. Excessive water use is a main cause of system failure. Use water-saving bathroom and kitchen fixtures (faucets, showers, toilets). Run and drain appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, one at a time. Spread laundry over the entire week and avoid partial loads. Fix all faucet and toilet leaks promptly.

  • Limit garbage disposal use. A garbage disposal adds solids and grease to your system, which could lead to drainfield failure.

  • Direct water from downspouts and roofs away from the drainfield. Additional water from these sources may prevent your drainfield from working properly.

  • Install risers for easier access. Risers from the tank lids to the soil surface make maintenance easier.

  • Don’t use septic tank additives or “miracle” system cleaners. Some of these chemicals can actually harm your system by allowing solids to flow into and clog the drainfield. The chemicals can also contaminate ground and surface water.

  • Don’t dispose of water from hot tubs into your septic system. Large volumes of water are harmful to the system, and the chlorine can destroy important bacteria in the system.

  • Don’t flush solid wastes into the system. These include diapers, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, tampons, condoms, and grease.

  • Don’t put strong chemicals, such as cleaning products, down the drain. Household chemicals — such as drain cleaners, paint thinners and floor cleaners — can destroy important bacteria in your septic tank and contaminate ground and surface water. Laundry additives like bleach and fabric softener can also have a negative effect on the bacteria in your tank.

  • Don’t construct patios, carports or use landscape plastic over the drainfield. Grass is the best cover for your septic tank and drainfield. Soil compaction and paving prevent oxygen from getting into the soil. This oxygen is needed by bacteria to break down and treat sewage.

  • Don’t park cars, trucks or heavy machinery on the septic tank and drainfield areas. The weight can lead to crushed or broken pipes and soil compaction. Compacted soils cannot absorb water from the drainfield. A broken underground pipe can lead to an expensive repair.
