Down to Earth Construction Services are assisting a customer in Acushnet MA today with septic system improvements. We are installing a riser to their septic system. When your septic system is more accessible, it is also much safer and more attractive. Once installed our strong, durable risers and system covers provide property owners with easy access to their septic system for future repairs, upgrades or cleaning services, eliminating the need to dig and excavate the system each time it needs to be pumped. Another septic improvement that we can provide to our customers is to install an effluent filter in the outlet tee of their septic tank which will extend the life of their system. Due to the high cost associated with replacing a septic system seemingly small upgrades to your system can be financially beneficial. We also have septic repairs for customers today in Fall River, Fairhaven and Mattapoisett MA. Keeping up with your septic system maintenance and repairs is always a good idea because if you neglect your septic system a small problem can quickly become a much larger and more expensive problem to fix so it is never a good idea to procrastinate. If you would be interested in septic improvements, if you require a septic repair or if you simply have septic questions please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services has many years of experience working in the septic industry in this region. This means that we can use our accumulated knowledge and the skills that we have developed to repair septic problems that our customers have. What is sometimes even more important is that we can locate the cause of the septic problem and this sometimes means that we have to educate septic system owners in the best way to use their system to prevent problems happening in the future. For example today we have been to a customer property in Acushnet MA and the mistake that they were making is that they were putting too much water into their system. The decomposition process can become strained if there is too much excess water in the system, resulting in a variety of problems. Ideally, septic owners should only be using a maximum of 50 gallons of water per day, per person. The following averages for common household activities can help you keep track:
Dishwasher Cycle – 7 gallons
Washing Machine – 40 gallons per load (less with front-loader machines)
Toilet – 2 gallons per flush, 1.6 gallons for newer standard toilets
Shower – 2.5 gallons per minute (a 10 minute shower = 25 gallons)
It can be difficult to stay on top of usage, particularly for large families, but laying down some basic guidelines can help everyone to work together. New environmentally-friendly appliances, toilets and shower heads can help reduce usage without a lot of extra effort. Trying to spread laundry loads out over a week rather than doing it all on one day helps and not running many water using appliances all at once. A water meter can be helpful for households that feed off of a well. The government website http://www.energystar.gov also has a lot of helpful ideas and tips for reducing water usage. It is always a good idea to remember that a septic system is installed based upon the number of people that are anticipated to be using it. If your base number increases, you might need to upgrade to a larger system. We have other septic repairs scheduled today in Marion, Mattapoisett, Fall River and Fairhaven MA. Down to Earth Construction Services were as surprised as many of our customers about the amount of snow that fell in this region overnight. Unfortunately some of the Title 5 Inspections that we had scheduled in Marion, Mattapoisett, Swansea, Fairhaven and Fall River could not take place because our customers could not get to the site or the septic system could not be accessed. However whether our inspector or customer can not get to the location of the inspection due to weather conditions or if the septic system is not accessible or for another reason there is no need for property owners to panic when they need the septic inspection for a property sale. Massachusetts Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs know that we live in a state where the weather can, a regularly does, effect plans. Therefore it is stated on the Mas Gov website:
“If weather conditions prevent an inspection before a sale, Title 5 allows the inspection to be done up to 6 months afterwards, provided that the seller notifies the buyer in writing of the need to complete the inspection.” For more information see:
If for any reason the inspection can not take place we will always endeavour to reschedule the inspection as quickly as possible at a time that is convenient. Down to Earth Construction Services conduct many septic inspections throughout the year and the majority are for property owners who are selling their home or commercial property and need to have a septic inspection because they have a septic system and are not on town sewer. However there are other instances when a septic inspection is required. Today we have septic inspections in Fall River, Fairhaven, Acushnet, Mattapoisett and Marion MA including an inspection for a condominium building which is not being sold. As stated on the Official Website of the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs:
“Units in a Condominium or Cooperative Corporation. The cooperative corporation or condominium association shall be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and upgrade of any system or systems serving the units, unless otherwise provided in the governing documents of the condominium association or the cooperative corporation. For a facility comprised of five or more condominium or cooperative units, each system located on the facility shall be inspected at least once every three years instead of at time of transfer of title and all existing systems shall be inspected by December 1, 1996.”
Our client’s Condominium building is larger than 5 units so we are inspecting their system as required by Massachusetts because it will soon be over 3 years since their last septic inspection. If you require a septic Inspection or if you have any questions about septic inspections please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services have extensive experience working within the field of septic systems. We are often contacted by property owners who need a specific engineering repair and have therefore chosen to contact Down to Earth Construction Services because we have the expertise to replace, repair or upgrade a septic system in a timely manner at a cost effective price. Today we have a D-Box or Distribution Box replacement for a customer in Freetown MA. A conventional septic system is composed of the septic tank and the drain field. The drain field is where the last stage of wastewater treatment system takes place. It is the area of effluent purification and distribution. An essential part of the drain field is the distribution box. The distribution box or d-box regulates the dispersion of effluent. To operate correctly a d-box must be properly installed a remain unglogged and level. If the d-box is tilted or clogged, it will only distribute the effluent on one part of the drain field which it will eventually result in the bursting out or overloading of the effluent onto the surface of the yard. This, as you can imagine, can have unpleasant results including sewage smells and puddling of waste in your yard. We have other septic repairs taking place today in Berkley, Mattapoisett and Marion MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have questions about septic systems please do contact our office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
Down to Earth Construction Services know that moving house is always a stressful business and try to make one part of the process easier. If you have a septic system you are likely to need a Title 5 Inspection. As stated on the MassGov website:

An inspection conducted up to three years before the time of transfer may be used if the inspection report is accompanied by system pumping records demonstrating that the system has been pumped at least once a year during that time. If weather conditions preclude inspection at the time of transfer, the inspection may be completed as soon as weather permits, but in no event later than six months after the transfer, provided that the seller notifies the buyer in writing”
