To Avoid A Septic Problem Be Aware Of What Should Not Be Flushed

Down to Earth Construction Services provide advice to their customers to ensure that they use their septic systems correctly and are therefore less likely to have a septic system problem. It is important to take good care of your septic system so you should know which items should never be flushed down the drain or toilet. This is because these things can overtax or destroy the biological digestion taking place within the system or clog pumps and pipes which will result in a septic problem.

Take care not to flush the following:

  • hair combings, dental floss, gauze bandages or disposable diapers
  • sanitary napkins, tampons, cigarette butts, or condoms
  • fat, grease or oil, coffee grounds, paper towels or cat litter
  • chemicals that could contaminate surface and groundwater, such as paints, varnishes thinners, waste oils, photographic solutions, or pesticides

Unfortunately we have attended many septic repairs that could have been avoided if this advice had been followed. Today we have septic repair appointments in Dighton, Rochester, Rehoboth, Berkley, Lakeville and Middleboro MA. If you require a septic repair, think you may have a septic problem or if you have any questions please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com

Your Leach Field Is As Important As Your Septic Tank To Your Septic System

Down to Earth Construction Services have been contacted by a customer in North Attleboro who requires a leach field repair. Many septic system problems are actually problems associated with the leach field and not the septic tank. Most people who have a septic system know they have a septic tank and where it is located but many do not realize the importance of a leach field to their septic system. Here are some ways to avoid problems:

  • Never park a car or heavy equipment over your leach field.
  • Don’t have heavy items or traffic on your leach field
  • Have your septic tank pumped regularly (every 3-5 years usually). Sludge overload near the drain field can result in sulfite and bio-mat buildup
  • Don’t pour grease, oil or fats down your sink
  • Never plant any new trees or large plants or bushes near your leach field

We have other septic repairs scheduled in Plainville, Wrentham, Rehoboth, Seekonk and Norton MA. If you have a concern about your septic system or if you require a septic repair please contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Repairs Including a D-Box Replacement

Down to Earth Construction Services are regularly called out to client properties to provide septic system repairs. Today we have a d-box replacement for a customer in Attleboro MA. The d-box, or distribution box, essentially connects the septic tank to your leach field or drain field. It ensures that the separated effluent is evenly ‘distributed’ over your leach field where it harmlessly enters your soil. If your d-box is broken or incorrectly installed this process will not happen correctly which can result in bad smells or puddling in your yard resulting from your waste not being treated correctly. You could also see back ups in your interior plumbing, sewage smells or slow running drains. All of these are indicators that you have a septic problem which you should have addressed immediately. A small septic problem can quickly become a large and expensive septic repair or failure if it is ignored. We also have septic repairs today in Seekonk, Fall River, Swansea and Rehoboth MA. If you require a septic repair or if you have any questions about septic systems please contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit http://www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Services For Commercial and Residential Customers

Down to Earth Construction Services is fortunate to have many long term customers who we have developed excellent working relationships with. This may seem unusual for a septic company but in addition to installing, repairing and inspecting septic systems we also provide preventative maintenance programs for our customers which many property owners choose to take after having a system installed and continue to receive for many years because they are so pleased with the service that they receive. We monitor and maintain our customers’ septic systems so they can be confident that their septic system is working correctly and will continue to do so. Nobody likes to have to deal with a septic breakdown but this is especially true for commercial business owners who lose revenue when they are unable to open due to a septic problem. That is why our customers include many local restaurants, takeaways, condominiums, coffee shops and fast food restaurants. We service our customers septic systems discreetly and quickly without causing any downtime in operation which is, of course, essential. We also service residential customers properties and the regularity of our services depends on the septic system and the use it gets. We have customers who have a 2nd home on the coast who don’t use their system all year round so they do not need their system to be serviced as frequently as a busy fast food restaurant. We generally see our customers on a quarterly, biannual or annual basis, as required. In actuality we don’t even need to ‘see’ our clients when we carry out a service because we can usually access the septic system without the property owners assistance. If you would be interested in hassle free septic system preventative maintenance please do contact our Norton office for details on our septic services or to make an appointment. Today we already have septic services for commercial and residential customers in Attleboro, East Bridgewater, Mansfield, Norton, Stoughton and Sharon MA. You can reach our office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Down to Earth Construction Services know, just like all other New Englanders, that storms and weather are a part of living in this region. However winter, storms and severe weather may result in property damage which can affect septic systems just like other parts of your property. Sewage is surfacing in the area of the septic tank or distribution box
There is sewage seeping through the foundation
The liquid level in the leach field is at the top of the crushed rock layer, the chambers or other underground structures
The vegetation over the leach field is greener and more lush than over adjacent areas in the yard
There is sewage odor i n the yard at times or constantly
There is flow back from the leach field when the septic tank is pumped
The septic tank needs to be pumped frequently
The septic tank discharge baffle is damaged or missing
Rain water seems to take longer to disappear over the leach field than over adjacent areas in the yard
Well water is contaminated

Today we have septic repairs scheduled for customers who have contacted us when they have noticed indicators of a septic problem in East Bridgewater, Mansfield, Sharon, Stoughton and Attleboro MA. Distribution Box (D-Box) Replacement and Septic Repairs

Down to Earth Construction Services are replacing a D-Box for a customer today in Freetown, MA. A septic distribution box  (D-Box) is a container used to receive septic system effluent from a septic tank and to re-distribute the effluent into a network of attached drainfield or soakaway bed absorption trenches and pipes. The distribution box works by gravity, flowing effluent into the drainfield (or leach field) piping network. It must be installed correctly to ensure that it  distributes evenly. You must also maintain your septic system and the best way to do this is to have your system regularly pumped and to use your septic system correctly. The following are some steps that you can take to ensure that you maintain your septic system:

  • Minimize the use of the garbage disposal

  • Do not put grease down your drains

  • Spread loads of laundry out over time rather than doing multiple loads in a short period of time, and use liquid detergents rather than powdered detergents

  • Avoid excessively long showers

  • Avoid leaving tap water running when shaving, brushing teeth or doing other personal or household tasks

  • Do not flush medications, harmful chemicals, excessive amounts of bleach, harsh drain cleaners or degreasers

  • Have the septic tank pumped at least every three years

  • Do not add any septic systems cleaners, enzymes or additives

  • Remove water conditioning backwash discharges from the septic system

  • Do not plant trees and shrubs over leach fields

  • Do not flush personal products, paper towels, wipes or diapers

  • Do not clean or rinse paint brushes in the sinks

  • Equip all hot tubs, spas, whirlpool baths, etcetera with drain limiting valves that will only allow five gallons per minute to drain from fixture

  • Do not drive vehicles over leach fields

We also have septic repairs for customers today in Acushnet, Fall River, Fairhaven and Lakeville MA. Many of these repairs could have been avoided if the property owners had followed some of the above advice. If you need a septic repair or if you have any questions about your septic system please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
