Keep Track Of Your Water Usage To Help Prevent Septic Problems

This means that we can use our accumulated knowledge and the skills that we have developed to repair septic problems that our customers have. What is sometimes even more important is that we can locate the cause of the septic problem and this sometimes means that we have to educate septic system owners in the best way to use their system to prevent problems happening in the future. Washing Machine – 40 gallons per load (less with front-loader machines)

Shower – 2.5 gallons per minute (a 10 minute shower = 25 gallons)

Trying to spread laundry loads out over a week rather than doing it all on one day helps and not running many water using appliances all at once. Septic Repairs including a D-Box Replacement

Down to Earth Construction Services have a septic repair scheduled today for a customer in East Bridgewater MA. We are replacing their Distribution Box (D-Box). A D-Box is exactly as it sounds its a box that moves, or distributes treated wastewater from your septic tank into your leach field or drain field. It must be level and installed correctly or your wastewater will not distribute evenly across your leach field and this can lead to over saturation and clogging which is not desirable. The d-box we are replacing was damaged when heavy equipment was mistakenly parked on top of it which broke and moved it. We have found that many property owners with septic systems while they know they have a septic tank sometimes forget that the leachfield and d-box are also essential parts of their septic system and must also be maintained. Here are a few simple tips to help you look after all parts of your septic system:

 

  • Minimize the use of the garbage disposal

  • Do not put grease down your drains

  • Spread loads of laundry out over time rather than doing multiple loads in a short period of time, and use liquid detergents rather than powdered detergents

  • Avoid excessively long showers

  • Avoid leaving tap water running when shaving, brushing teeth or doing other personal or household tasks

  • Do not flush medications, harmful chemicals, excessive amounts of bleach, harsh drain cleaners or degreasers

  • Have the septic tank pumped at least every three years

  • Do not add any septic systems cleaners, enzymes or additives

  • Remove water conditioning backwash discharges from the spetic system

  • Do not plant trees and shrubs over leach fields

  • Do not flush personal products, paper towels, wipes or diapers

  • Do not clean or rinse paint brushes in the sinks

  • Equip all hot tubs, spas, whirlpool baths, etcetera with drain limiting valves that will only allow five gallons per minute to drain from fixture

  • Do not drive vehicles over leach fields

Title 5 Inspections For Properties With Septic Systems

Down to Earth Construction Services have Title 5 Inspections scheduled today in Rehoboth, Seekonk, Mattapoisett, Acushnet and Norton MA. In Massachusetts a septic inspection is required in the following instances:

 

  • Within 2 years before a sale. If weather conditions prevent inspection at the time of a sale, the inspection must take place within 6 months afterward.

  • When there is a proposed change to the facility which requires a building or occupancy permit.

  • Any change in the footprint of a building, to make sure that new building construction will not take place on top of any system components or on the system’s reserve area.

  • For large systems with a design flow of 10,000 to 15,000 gallons per day or more at full build-out, on the basin schedule shown in 310 CMR 15.301(6), and every five years thereafter.

  • Every 3 years for shared systems.

  • When the property is divided, or ownership of 2 or more properties is combined.

  • When MassDEP or the local Board of Health orders an inspection

Experienced Working With Entire Septic Systems Including The Leach Field, D-Box and Septic Tank

Down to Earth Construction Services is experienced working with entire septic systems which includes the septic tank but also the leach field or drainfield, d-box (distribution box) and any other associated parts such as a septic pump if used. Many property owners who have a septic system to treat their wastewater forget that an essential part of their septic system is the leach field, or drain field. A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drainfield, all connected by pipes, called conveyance lines. Your home’s wastewater flows into your septic tank where it is held and solids sink to the bottom and lighter scum floats to the top. The solids and scum are decomposed by bacteria and periodically pumped. The treated wastewater or effluent flows through the distribution box into your drainfield or leach field where it then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified (secondary treatment). There are steps that you can take to ensure that your entire septic system continues to operate correctly including:
