Cesspool Services and Cesspool Replacement In Massachusetts

Down to Earth Construction Services know that the word ‘cesspool’ does not conjure up pleasing images and if you are considering buying a property that word can certainly put a damper on enthusiasm you might have for it. However with the proper maintenance a cesspool is not the problem that you may fear. A cesspool is a pit which acts as both a settling chamber for solids and a leaching system for liquids. In Massachusetts a cesspool is not always required to be replaced. Infact as stated on the Mas Gov website:

‘Only those cesspools that exhibit signs of hydraulic failure, are located extremely close to private or public water supplies, or otherwise fail to protect or pose a threat to public health, safety or the environment will need to be upgraded” For more information see: https://www.mass.gov/service-details/title-5-faq

However a cesspool does generally require more ongoing maintenance than a conventional septic system and the use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. Down to Earth Construction Services do provide property owners with cesspool services to ensure that they continue to operate correctly and efficiently. However if you decide to have you cesspool replaced we also have extensive experience with cesspool replacement. Today we have cesspool services and are starting a cesspool replacement in Wrentham, Upton, Marlborough, Bolton and Clinton MA. If you have a cesspool and have questions or if you need a cesspool service or replacement please do contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Designs and Septic Installation Work Even In Winter

Down to Earth Construction Services know that with snow on the ground from previous storms and more expected this weekend many property owners are not considering extensive construction work. Who can excavate in frozen ground and the resulting slush and mud? While it is true that we will not be able to do a septic system installation when the ground is frozen solid what we can do is all of the background paperwork that is required in addition to the physical work. When a property owner requires a septic system installation we can provide the septic designs working with our customer to design a septic system that works for their specific needs and those of their property, budget and the environment. We have extensive experience in this region so we know each individual town’s septic requirements and the state regulations so we can ensure that your septic system will be correct and there will not be delays caused by paperwork problems once work has started. We have recently provided septic designs and septic system installations to customers in Canton, Marlborough, Wrentham and Wayland MA. If you would be interested in a septic designs, septic installation or have any questions about septic systems please do contact our office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

It Is Unwise To Ignore A Septic Problem And Hope It Will Go Away

Down to Earth Construction Service give you a pinch and a punch for the first of the month! The year is certainly marching along and we can’t quite believe that March is here already. Spring is on its way and property owners are starting to think about repairs and maintenance that have been put off over the winter. However if you have a concern about your septic system it is wise to have it addressed immediately and not leave it until your springtime maintenance. Indicators that you may have a septic problem include:

  • Pipe Gurgling Sounds

  • Toilet Flushing Issues

  • Slow Drains

  • Water Backup

  • Bad Odors

  • Greener Grass

  • Patches of Standing Water

If you have noticed one or more of these signs at your property please do consider calling to discuss your concerns with our experienced technicians. If a septic problem is ignored it is very unlikely to go away on its own and will quite possibly become a much larger and more expensive repair if left. Today we have septic repair appointments in Plainville, North Attleboro, Wrentham and Foxboro MA. If you wish to schedule a septic repair or if you have septic questions or concerns please do contact us at our Norton office on  508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Repairs Can Prevent a Failing Septic System Causing Serious Problems

Down to Earth Construction Services know that although there are many types of septic systems in use today they are all designed for each site and mostly work on the same principles. A conventional septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drain field, all connected by pipes, called conveyance lines. Your home’s wastewater flows into your septic tank where it is held and solids sink to the bottom and lighter scum floats to the top. The solids and scum are decomposed by bacteria and periodically pumped. The treated wastewater or effluent flows through the distribution box into your drain field or leach field where it then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified (secondary treatment). A properly functioning septic system does not pollute the groundwater. However a failing septic system can have many unpleasant repercussions as stated on the Mass Gov website:

“Failing systems can

  • cause a serious health threat to your family and neighbors,
  • degrade the environment, especially lakes, streams and groundwater,
  • reduce the value of your property,
  • be very expensive to repair,
  • and put thousands of water supply users at risk if you live in a public water supply watershed and fail to maintain your system.”

For more information see: https://www.mass.gov/guides/caring-for-your-septic-system

Therefore if you suspect your septic system is not operating correctly or you have concerns about your system do not put off contacting a professional. Today we have septic repair appointments in Plainville, North Attleboro, Mansfield and Wrentham MA. If you need to schedule a septic repair or if you have any questions or concerns about your septic system please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Cesspool Maintenance Sustains The Integrity Of The Environment

Down to Earth Construction Services has cesspool maintenance appointments today in Blackstone, Bellingham, Wrentham, Franklin and Uxbridge MA. A cesspool is any pit or container that receives wastewater from a house or building. The term “cesspool” is usually used to refer to an open pit that is lined with rocks or concrete, but an underground tank or holding container that is not connected to a drainfield can also be defined as a cesspool. The main function of cesspools is the storage of wastewater. The use of cesspools may overload the capacity of the soil to remove bacteria, viruses, and phosphorus, and to nitrify ammonia and organic nitrogen compounds. Cesspools are only found servicing older properties because other more efficient means of waste treatment are now available. We provide cesspool services and repairs and have also provided cesspool replacement when required. We recently replaced a cesspool for a customer in Norton MA because it was starting to pollute the local groundwater. Ongoing maintenance of your cesspool by having it serviced and having pumpouts is especially important because to sustain the integrity of the environment you need to ensure your cesspool is operating correctly and the surrounding area is not saturated. If you have any questions about cesspools or wish to schedule a cesspool service please do contact our Norton office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com

Septic Repairs Are Necessary When Cold Weather Causes Septic Problems

Down to Earth Construction Services know that septic problems arise whatever the weather is. However cold weather brings its own set of problems for example:

  • If you have a ‘summer home’ or go away and leave your property for periods of time or just use it part of the week wastewater does not enter the system regularly enough and can freeze

  • If you drive over your septic leach field or drainfield you compact your soil. Compacted soil freezes more easily which can result in damaged parts and possible a failing septic system. If it is snowy and you drive over the snow on your system the snow will then provide less insulation for your septic system than snow which has been left untouched

  • If you don’t have enough vegetative cover over your septic system you have less insulation from the cold

  • Leaks in your plumbing release water into the septic which can then freeze

  • Poor pipe drainage can be caused by deteriorated pipes, if they are full or back filled with soil or poorly installed. Liquid will pool on one side and can then freeze

Essentially the cold can lead to your septic system freezing which leads to problems, possible repairs and even septic failures. Ironically snow falling is a good thing. Fresh snow is an excellent insulator. As it gets compacted it becomes less effective but it is better than a complete lack of snow cover, dry soil conditions and very cold air temperatures for an extended period of time which will all contribute to septic problems. Today we have appointments in Foxboro, Franklin, Bellingham, Blackstone and Wrentham for septic repairs, some of which are caused by septic system owners not planning for the cold weather. If you have any questions about septic system or need to have a septic repair please do contact our Norton Office on 508-622-5759 or visit www.downtoearthconst.com
